Geriatric Wellness
Your pet's life expectancy is now greatly enhanced due to regular physical examinations, preventative vaccinations, good nutrition, and advances in veterinary medicine. Along with the longer lifespan that your pet can now expect, he or she may experience an increase in the number of diseases, including many curable or controllable problems.

As pets get older, they begin to have subtle problems that aren’t obvious to you or us. The only way to assess these is to perform specific tests to evaluate organ function. We recommend that all of our geriatric patients that are seven years of age or older take advantage of one of our geriatric programs. These programs include a semi-annual thorough physical exam and laboratory diagnostics as recommended by your pet’s veterinarian, which may include a complete blood count, blood chemistry profile, urinalysis and thyroid test, as well as possible radiographs (either x-rays or ultrasounds).

As in all health evaluations, early detection is the key as it allows for more and better treatment options. It is best to uncover any health problems before they become severe and more costly to manage. Age Table for Dogs to People
The following table matches dog years to human years. It takes into account the fact that dogs mature differently than people. It also takes into account the dog size, which is a strong factor in determining expected lifespan. However, this is just a rough indication since the other aging factors discussed above (e.g. breed) are not included in this table.
